The constant stress of everyday life can have an impact on our skin. Stress and a number of other factors can leave our skin looking tired, thanks in part to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, skin conditions such as acne can leave behind extensive scarring. This in turn affects our appearance and our self-confidence.
To revitalize dull skin for patients in The Woodlands, we use a technique called micro-needling. It can be used to treat sun spots, pigmentation, scars, wrinkles, and other skin issues.
Micro-needling, also known as derma rolling, is a type of cosmetic treatment in which the production of collagen is induced with the help of fine needles. The technique is minimally invasive, is relatively safe, and does not cause any damage to the topmost layer of the skin.
How Does Micro-Needling Work?
Micro-needling involves the use of an electric device that is shaped like a pen. The device features several tiny needles at the tip. A numbing agent is first applied to the targeted areas on the face. Most numbing agents consist of a substance known as lidocaine.
After a couple of minutes, a rejuvenating serum rich in vitamins that stimulate the production of collagen is applied to the targeted areas. Once the skin absorbs the serum, the electric device is run over the skin.
The needles at the tip of the device create microscopic wounds on the surface of the skin. These tiny wounds allow the topical agents to penetrate deep into the skin layers. The healthy skin surrounding each wound allows for a faster healing process, which in turn stimulates the production of new collagen and healthy skin cells. Micro-needling also allows for the proliferation of new capillaries, thereby improving blood flow.
Before the micro-needling procedure, you’ll need to arrange a consultation with skilled Houston dermatologist Dr. Anita Gill. Dr. Gill will explain the nuances of the technique so that you can have an idea of what will happen during the treatment. Micro-needling is a fairly safe procedure and does not require any preparation beforehand.
After a Micro-Needling Treatment
A mild degree of swelling and redness is normal after a micro-needling treatment. This is quite normal and is a temporary side effect of the procedure. The swelling is likely to ameliorate within six hours of the treatment. Patients can use ice packs in order to help bring down the swelling.
In the weeks after the treatment, your skin will gradually improve, and you will notice that your skin has become brighter and more vibrant. This is due to the collagen and elastin fiber production promoted by micro-needling. The skin will continue to improve, causing scars, marks, sun spots, and fine lines to gradually disappear.
Usually, a single treatment of micro-needling is enough to achieve satisfactory results. In some cases, multiple treatments may be required. In these cases, two to three treatments are scheduled, spaced apart by about six to eight weeks. The results of the treatment last for up to six months.
